My Word of the Month is Solution

Posted on April 02, 2013

I love our Best Solutions Issue and want to wrap it up with five solutions for the most common problems I hear from working moms around the country.

Problem 1: I am overwhelmed by the amount of work there is to do at home. The second shift is making me exhausted and cranky, so I can’t enjoy my family. Solution: Co-housework. Train your husband to take responsibility for housework by giving up control. He needs to do the laundry, shopping, cooking his way—not your way. No spouse? Get the kids on board (see “The One and Only”).

Problem 2: I feel isolated at work and in my community, like I’m the only working mom in the world!
Solution: Know the stats: 74 percent of moms work. Then take time to cultivate a best friend, building the relationship intentionally—giving as much as you take.

Problem 3: My boss doesn’t approve of workplace flex. Solution: Find two other parents who want flexible work arrangements and go together to HR to discuss what the company flex policy is (versus your boss’s feelings). Flexible work is reaching a tipping point of acceptability, and most companies don’t want to be on the wrong side of history with this culture shift.

Problem 4: I’m more capable and dedicated than most people in my department, but because I leave at 5:30 to pick up my daughter I am treated like a slacker. Solution: Toot your own horn. Talk to your boss about your successes and ask for a high-visibility assignment. Seek attention for your work instead of your schedule.

Problem 5: I feel guilty about not being at home with my toddler.
Solution: Twice a year, reassess your commitment to your career. This way, you won’t have to think about it all the time. Most moms work to use their skills and education and provide for their families. Know that building a career can have a huge positive impact on your happiness and your kids’ future.
