The former Punky Brewster child star (and now mom of two!) opens up in her book, Happy Chaos. (More family photos here.)
What was the impetus for writing your book, Happy Chaos?
I think that there can be a happy balance between following your dreams of having a career and also being a fantastic mom. The balance might not look perfect, and it won’t be, but women can do it all.
Fans from your Punky Brewster days will also love the book.
There is a lot of fun nostalgia from my Punky days in Happy Chaos. While I wrote lots of anecdotes about my acting days, the book truly embraces parenthood and also my own childhood. Happy Chaos has lots of photos in it, from the early days up until now. It was a fun book to write.
What do your daughters Poet [6], and Jagger [3] think of your success?
Poet asked me the other day if I loved what I do, and I told her I did. She said, “Mommy, that’s awesome! I want to do everything, too!” I love that she feels that she can do it all. And my daughters are so much a part of what I do. When I’m at my store, The Little Seed, they are there helping me pick out colors for new items. They come with me everywhere. When we did the video for Target, Poet was helping to direct it! She was telling me how to stand and how I should move.
You’re the Mommy Ambassador for Target. What has that experience been like?
It’s an amazing relationship, because frankly, I am a huge Target shopper. Half an hour in that store is like my holy grail! I get everything from my clothes, the kids’ clothes, to sippy cups, sheets and pillows. It’s truly one-stop shopping for us. I’m also thrilled that Target also carries The Little Seed line. And as Target’s Mommy Ambassador, I connect with moms via social media and hear their wants and needs as well as their insights.
You have over one million followers on Twitter (@moonfrye). How did you become such a social media maven?
It happened organically. I was just being totally honest and sharing my daily life online. Ever since I posted my first tweet, the response was amazing. I would ask questions of the day, mostly because I love asking questions and am genuinely interested in what people have to say. I would share crazy things that happened in my life as a mom, (like how my girls would draw on my walls) and the community grew very quickly. They’ve become like friends, and I want them to be a part of my life in some way. Ultimately, it’s the humbling part of motherhood that connects us all.
Have you fully embraced the chaos?
I wish I could be perfect, but I can’t. I love being pretty imperfect. Every person has their own parenting style. I have some friends whom I am blown away by; their kids are on strict schedules or the family does composting. We try to incorporate elements of it all into our lives. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t! But we all have imperfect parenting moments, (like sending your kid to school without lunch!), but we should always try to do better next time. In the end, it’s just all part of the happy chaos.
