My morning routine at work is pretty much the same every day. Before I log in to check emails, I head to the break room to fix my first cup of “Joe”. Just about everyone in the office knows that I must have my first cup of coffee in the morning, or I will not be able to function throughout the day. Yes, I am a “coffee head”, “coffee fanatic”, “coffee addict”, and any other title that fits the description. I admit it – I just love my morning Joe. But, is this a bad thing? Will my love for coffee come back to haunt me at some point in my life?Well, the truth is that there are actually some benefits to drinking coffee. Studies have shown that coffee drinkers are less likely than non-coffee drinkers to develop type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and liver cancer. Additionally, some studies have also shown that coffee drinkers are at lower risk for having heart disease and stroke. However, we all know that famous saying, “Too much of anything is not good for you”.While, there are a few benefits to drinking coffee, we could derail these benefits by including unhealthy condiments like sugar and heavy creams. Just think, a 16 oz. caramel frappucino at Starbucks is a whopping 410 calories. However, a 16 oz. cup of plain brewed Starbucks coffee (no additives) is just 5 calories. Big difference, right? Over consumption can also spoil some of the benefits of drinking coffee. Consuming too many caffeinated beverages has been known to cause irritability, increased blood pressure, sleeplessness, and dehydration. So while I must have my morning Joe, I have to be sure to have it in moderation. It’s good to know that there are some benefits to drinking coffee. Now I can relish in one of my favorite beverages, guilt free. - www.careermommies.com
