Last week, I wrote about the need to conduct a Personal Brand Audit in my life. Having been greatly inspired by a certain Digital Princess - @AmyJoMartin from Digital Royalty, to clear out the clutter, simplify where needed and increase organization to maximize my day, I wanted to give you an update on my progress, lest you think I was full of you know what.
After all, follow through is key!
In case you didn't read last week's post (!!!), I was down at Disney for the third annual Social Media Moms Conference, and the biggest thing I got from my three days was that it was time to do a little Spring Cleaning 'round here. This stemmed from a feeling of intense planner overload, as I've (rather willingly) created a situation in which there is simply TOO. MUCH. GOING. ON.
Admittedly, April was a pretty travel intensive month for both my husband and me. And that always plays a major role in feeling connected to your home and family - in fact, it does a major number on it. You know its bad when you simply move anything clean left from one trip into the suitcase for the next trip, adding clean underwear as you go.
Yet, even before this month, there had been a nagging feeling that I was doing too much of certain things, and not enough of others. I know that as working moms, we all struggle with work/life balance. It's simply par for the course. In my situation, however, I work for myself. An intentional situation - created in large part so that I may make my own schedule, set my own priorities and call it a day (or a week) whenever I want.
If that's the case - why am I not taking better advantage of my ability to make my own rules?
So- that leads me to last week when we discussed the concept of auditing your personal brand - aka running an audit on your entire life. Preferably on a quarterly basis, with an annual review come Dec. 31st. As an Organization junkie (yes, I am a Virgo...can't help my addiction to compartmentalizing absolutely anything), I am jumping at the chance to challenge myself in this way.
Not one to make a commitment that I don't follow up on, I thought perhaps you may be interested in my progress. And I'm interested in yours - so please feel free to share your thoughts, ideas and changes.
Here's what I've done thus far:
* Put pen to paper to create a more functional schedule. Blocking of certain time frames for specific tasks. 1 hour this morning for household chores. 1 hour for checking email. 30 mins for this. Then on to a client's website project for the remainder of my work day. Facebook is off. Twitter is off. I will not answer the phone. (Sorry Mom). Someone just knocked on the door. It was hard, but I kept my tush in this chair.
* Each day of my week now has a work task assigned to it. This helps me to focus in the moment, as well as know what my goals for the week are.
*I have decided that on a professional level - it's time to streamline the workload, which I am doing. It's about delegating where necessary or not accepting new projects for a bit. It has to be done.
*Moved my "junky" pile of work from the dining room table to my home office. Amazing what a difference that makes in your mental ability to be productive! Added bonus - I officially have a dining room table again. Perfect for when the Tyrants act up at mealtime, I can now separate when necessary.
* I have also decided to recommit to writing - both on this blog and (perhaps :) in other areas as well. It's my first love, and I have missed it.
Not bad for three days in! Hopefully, I can keep it up.
Share your progress with me here, and also on Facebook and Twitter. You can find me @MaguireMedia and @3TinyTyrants.
