How My Son Inspires Innovation in My Business

Posted on May 02, 2013

Back when I was in business school, I had a close friend who had twins. In her pre-baby life, her career was her number one priority, and she worked hard to advance in it: long hours, weekends, the whole 9 yards. She was very successful. Then, she had two babies at once, and her life was turned upside down. Priorities rearranged - you know how it goes.

In her first year of motherhood, my friend struggled with the work/life balance in many ways, but the one that stuck out to me the most was feeding time. She never had time to make her own, fresh, organic baby food, and she felt guilty feeding her baby the mega-processed jarred food that was available. Her struggle — and babies’ eating habits — inspired me to “think outside the jar” and launch Happy Baby’s first line: frozen, organic baby food.

Then, a few years later I became a mom to Zane, and I understood the work/life struggle on a much deeper level. As the CEO of Happy Family, though, I was in a unique position: when the market wasn’t providing me with what I needed to be the best possible mom to Zane, I simply created it (Okay, that sounds a lot easier than it was, but you get my drift). For example, as Zane has gotten older his dietary needs and restrictions have made me acutely aware of how hard it can be to find allergen friendly foods that your children will actually eat. So, in almost all of our products we have worked with pediatricians and nutritionists not only to add extra nutrition to many items, like Choline, probiotics, and Vitamin D (did you know that the majority of children under age 4 are deficient in Vitamin D?), but we have also worked together to eliminate key allergens from the vast majority of our product line.

All of our products are developed with today’s children’s nutritional needs in mind — the actual children who are both consuming and inspiring the new foods you see on shelf. When snack time got challenging, Happy Family came out with Happy Puffs, our melt-in-your-mouth, gluten-free snack that’s enriched with vitamins and minerals. Most recently, our new Happy Tot Greek Yogurt pouches were developed to have protein in them to help give toddlers the energy they need to take on the day. Bam! Snack time covered, plus Zane gets some essential vitamins and minerals and we get to help other babies (and mommies) have an easy, healthy snack time. Win-win-win.

And maybe another win: this working mother is helping other working mothers make life just a little easier, with more time for what’s important: being the best possible moms we can be.
