Strengthen Yourself and Help Others Too!

Even if that college happens to have a campus dotted with real marble columns and ivy covered walls, rather than one that simply exists in cyberspace, do we learn everything we need to know professionally there? Many professionals may in fact come away with a great deal of debt, and many high level skills, but not always the brimful he or she had expected to acquire. Luckily, many non-profit organizations support continued career development. I noticed that my own town’s Chamber of Commerce offers an empowering “W.O.W.” meeting each month.

Proud Mama Moment

Maybe it's because I was raised by hippies.  Learning protest songs before nursery rhymes must have had some deep and lasting impression on my psyche. But no matter how much I rebelled against my parents (and believe me they still question if I could in fact come from their gene pool) by going to work in finance for "the man," or loving church, or living in a lovely Edward Sisscorhand's suburban neighborhood I still love rooting for the underdog.  Most especially when the underdog is in the right.  I may disavow many of my parent

The Worst Travel Guilt – The Boston Marathon Bombings

Let me start by saying that as a Boston resident, I am very lucky that my family and friends were not physically harmed in the recent marathon bombings. I'm also very appreciative and understanding of the fact that although I travel more than the average mom, I don't travel as much as some other working moms out there.

A Step Forward for Family Leave

Are you as annoyed by the so-called mommy wars as I am?

The press, and some mom bloggers, hated Marissa Mayer for her “tough” work-at-work policy.  They scoffed at Sheryl Sandberg's “class-biased” call to lean in to your ambition.

Every time the press discusses Ms. Mayer or Ms. Sandberg they are compelled to include a conversation about class or feminism.

Posted on May 01, 2013

Are you itching to go back to work? Want to start your own business? Or just want to try something new and different? If you’re nodding your head “yes” but haven’t yet taken the plunge, it might be fear that’s holding you back. Fear of failure or fear of others not loving your big idea as much as you do can outweigh your desire for change if you let it.

Fear is a legitimate emotion that can’t be ignored, but it can be mitigated. Here are 4 steps to lead you confidently down the path to your next big thing.

 Step 1: List Your Fears

Parent-friendly Business

I often think about issues related to women in business.  However, the proverbial glass ceiling has been on my brain more than usual during the past few weeks.  When I graduated from college in the early 1990’s, there was talk about shattering the glass ceiling.  What’s amazing to me is the number of advancements that have been made since 1990.  Think about it!  Since then, the internet was created, the Human Genome Project was completed and the first cloned sheep (Dolly) was born.  Yet, during the same time the percentage of women CEOs in Fortune 500 companies

“Think Cold” reads the title of Marilyn Singer’s first poem about Humboldt Penguins, creatures who inhabit the hot, dry coastal deserts of Peru and Chile in her 2012 collection: A Strange Place To Call Home: The World’s Most Dangerous Habitats& The Animals That Call Them Home.  Although, “newly published poetry collection” and “State Standards” seem to be phrases at odds, bright teachers and children show how creativity lives among the standards.  Publi

Mastering The Art of Problem Solving

To get clear about the best way to effectively address a specific performance or behavior problem, the first step is asking yourself which course of action the problem calls for?

Strong is The New Skinny

I hate lifting weights. Between my weak arms, the intimidating steroid pit at my gym, and you know the part where I actually have to lift the weights it just sends me over the edge. Luckily, my gym has a barbels class that I attend religiously (like lapsed-Catholic religiously) with my partner in crime - I mean my accountability partner, Sara.
