On the importance of women in STEM

The world population is projected to reach 10 billion by 2050 (gasp!), which firmly establishes the availability of natural resources as our biggest challenge for the future, both near and far.  That means stretching food, water, and energy supplies to unimaginable levels, as well as making sure that our societal infrastructures, waste management systems, and medical technologies can accommodate the exponentially growing community of Homo sapiens.

"What would George think if he knew you were crying over this?"

I majored in Advertising/Journalism in college. Part of the requirement was to complete a 6 week internship. Thinking I wanted to write fashion advertising, I applied to my favorite San Francisco apparel store and was thrilled to get the "job". But not for long. The ad department, 100% female, seemed to be running on estrogen and tears, not hard work or common sense. After that I decided not to work in fashion or in any primarily female environment.

8th Grade Promotion: A Chance to Learn From My Son and My Younger Self

Things changed since I grew up (wow – I sound like my parents – always surprises me when it happens).  I went to my eldest son’s 8th grade promotion recently.  I was struck by a few things.  First, going to high school was not a promotion when I was a kid.  Second, I am too young to have a high schooler. . or at least I feel that way.

Forget Perfectionism!

This week, I attended my first networking function. Hosted by Middleburg Women, it featured an incredible lineup of speakers...the topic, "Women in Media - Striking the Balance" really sounded appealing. So I went.

These things are always nerve wracking. After all, you could be walking into the lion's den. A ballroom full of Type A Mommies - all decked out in pearls and heels, fresh from the boardroom of their billion dollar companies and soon rushing home to prep a homecooked (and organic!) meal for their families. UGH.

For Millennials, Weiner Case Is Not Proof of Women’s Ability

Posted on June 15, 2011

On Sunday, I read "When It Comes to Scandal, Girls Won't Be Boys" in the New York Times focused on the current Congressman Anthony Wiener scandal.  Presented with a brief, quiet moment at home, I starting jotting down my thoughts about the Weiner matter, but each time, my kids interrupted me.
