Diverse women comprise 25% of the workforce at this health benefits company, and they are increasingly spotted in influential positions, now serving as vice presidents (here, an especially prestigious role) in six departments. Beyond that, they chair six of the company’s nine associate resource groups, from PRIDE (for African Americans) to SOMOS (for Hispanics/Latinos) and ACE (for Asians). The innovative Associate Resource Group Learning Circle offers career development activities for group leaders and private, speed and virtual mentoring for members, along with regular tele­seminars on business and cultural topics. The largest of the company’s affinity networks, Women of WellPoint, hosts its own discussions on life and work with female executives, which give employees a good idea of what they, too, can accomplish. Internal leadership programs are constantly monitored for participation by women and people of color, which helps to ensure that those who eventually move into key positions reflect client diversity.
