Imagine being paid for a 40-hour workweek but only putting in 37.5 hours. For many hourly employees of this media and marketing services company, management offers this option to ensure they make time for personal matters. And that’s not the only way the company pads workers’ paychecks. When health insurance costs recently increased, hourly workers’ compensation was boosted to cover the difference. Anyone who works 20 hours per week is eligible for medical, dental, vision and mental health benefits for themselves and their families. All employees are in the habit of adjusting their schedules; last year, nearly half of all hourly workers (primarily those in manufacturing and production) compressed their workweeks, too. Mothers-to-be can take 12 job-guaranteed weeks off, with seven weeks partially paid; managers are briefed on leave policies and how best to facilitate moms’ return to work. Workers who adopt may receive ten paid days off, plus $5,000 to cover expenses. (New fathers get one paid week of leave.) Resource and referral services help parents find child care, and they can stash $4,400 in pretax accounts to pay for it each year, with a $600 match. Dedicated lactation rooms exist in 24 locations, and there are five family rooms at larger sites that entertain kids with toys and movies during emergencies and child-care binds. On holidays, some sites delight children with Easter egg hunts and Halloween parties.
