University at Buffalo
Tracking down child care is a snap for parents at this New York institution: Its two campus locations, just a ten-minute shuttle ride from each other in Buffalo and Amherst, both boast on-site day cares for kids ages 6 weeks to 5 years. Open weekdays from 7:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., the facilities welcome new mothers with free formula and lactation rooms, treat toddlers to sensory and artistic activities and entertain pre-K kids with cooking, books and drama. (In summer, children ages 5 through 8 enjoy field trips with the centers’ summer camp.) Families are grateful for their low student-to-teacher ratios; those who enroll more than one child also earn a 5% discount on tuition. If parents seek backup care, in-home care or help for children with special needs, they can contact the university’s resource and referral service for ideas.
