Big changes were afoot at this media company in 2011. Its six-week Global Corporate Challenge saw U.S. workers strapping on pedometers and walking an average of 11,385 steps per day, which helped the majority of them improve their health—not to mention lose a total of 7,150 pounds. Parents exercise by exploring the company’s walking trails, playing in its sports leagues and enjoying workout classes at local gyms (aided by corporate discounts). For better eating habits, they check out telecourses on optimal diets for women and foods that fight illness. New moms can take at least six fully paid weeks off, then phase back to work on a reduced schedule, using lactation rooms at most sites; free prenatal and child safety kits are available upon request. Should family members become seriously ill, employees have two fully paid weeks off to look after them.
