Parents occupy more than 40% of all jobs at this professional services firm, so many people were thankful when it introduced its new backup dependent care program in 2011. The program, which is also available to employees who care for adult and elder relatives, can be used 10 times per year; it costs $8 per hour for in-home help and $20 to use a nearby child care center. “Just knowing I can count on this option allows me to focus when I am in the office,” says audit manager Irina Berkon, who has one child. Helping to bridge coverage gaps is a range of flexible work options (telecommuting, compressed workweeks); people can now enjoy these schedules upon date of hire, and individual offices often hold discussions on ways to better facilitate their use. Everyone receives full benefits from day one, with no hourly work minimum required.
