Chapman and Cutler
Major changes made this firm inviting to women in 2011. To help more of its female lawyers enter the pipeline for top jobs, management appointed diversity champions to each practice group and tasked them with ensuring that potential leaders are given challenging development opportunities. To retain women who want to expand their families, it increased birth and adoption leave for primary caregivers from 12 to 16 fully paid weeks (plus another two weeks of unpaid leave), and doubled leave for non-primary caregivers from two paid weeks to four, allowing employees to take that time at any point within a year after a child’s arrival. Same-sex domestic partner benefits were enhanced, and the firm’s main lactation room (one of three) got a face-lift. There’s even a new concierge service, which helps attorneys plan trips, book concert tickets, arrange car repairs and more.
