Balance? No Such Thing!

Posted on February 24, 2011

I've been absent from my Working Mother blog duties as of late.  My excuse?  I was trying to find the balance in my life.  The balance between being a divorced mom to two children, running my household, growing a small business, networking, meetings, snow shoveling, self-care (I'm joking...no self-care!), and whatever other hat I have to wear.  Here's my conclusion:  There's no such thing as balance.

That's right, I said it.  There's no such thing as balance.  What is there then, you ask?  There's good days and bad days.  And in the end, you hope and pray that the good outweigh the bad.  This is my story and I'm stickin' to it!

Like many women in my situation, I have stressed about trying to do it all.  My Type A++ personality insists on it.  Fit every single thing into a day that you possibly can so you have the satisfaction of checking off everything on your to-do list as you lay awake in your bed thinking of more things to do that will make you feel good about yourself.  The only thing this has gotten me is more trips to my stylist to color my hair more often. (Yes kids, Mommy does have gray hair!)

In looking back over the last several months, I can pick off the number of really great days I've had and I can easily remember the not so great days.  Those days with great events included real accomplishments, like being on TV for my business, winning a contest for a local charity, seeing my children excel.  The days with not-so-great events included real lessons I had to learn, like being patient, like thinking before speaking, or simply, not trying to be all things to all people.

So as I transform from a Type A++ personality to a Type A (come on, you know you can't drop a whole letter in one lifetime!), I will strive to have more good days than bad and share my story from time to time in the hopes that it resonates with the other working moms out there.   Clearly today is a good day!
