Back to School Plan

Posted on August 21, 2009

August signifies that summer is coming to an end and it's time for the kids to go back to school.  Coming up a Back to School Plan is a great way to ensure that one feels a sense of balance during this busy time.  It also helps to ensure that nothing falls through the cracks.  A little planning and preparation can make the transition from summer to school a pleasant one.

Many kids enjoy going school shopping.  For some, school shopping rates up there next to Christmas.  Before hitting the mall purge through the kids dresser drawers and closets.  Have them help you pack up any articles of clothing that no longer fit or those things that are "out of style." You can also have them go with you to donate these items to local charity.  Since you have the kids in the purging mood, go ahead and have them clean out their rooms.  It's a good idea to pull out those hidden treasures under their bed and in their closets.  Giving their room a clean sweep can give them a sense of having a clean slate.

In the midst of purging, make a list of those things you need to purchase before going to the store.  Remember to include those all important essential items such as socks, etc. Having this list will assist in giving you a sense of direction and will cut down on the amount of time that is spent wandering around the mall.

Now that the clothing shopping is done, it's time to get some school supply.  Some schools will giveJ0439412 parents a school supply list prior to the first day of school.  This takes the guess work out of what is needed and you can still take advantage of the school supply sales.  If you don't have a school supply list you can still pick up school supply staples such as pencils, pens and notebook paper.

Another idea is to check around the house.  You may be surprised at all of the goodies that get tucked away during the year. This has happened to me.  I have brought several packs of notebook paper when it was on sale and put it away in the closet.  When my daughter and I were coming up with our Back to School Plan, I was pleasantly surprised that I already had this school essential.

Another essential step is to develop a budget for your back to school expenses.  Sure your teens might want to wear the hottest trends straight off the runway.  However, set limits on how much you will spend.  Check out places like Marshalls or TJ Maxx.  You can often find some great deals on designer duds.

Preparing to return to school is an exciting time.  Developing a written plan of where you need to go, what you need to get, and what you need to do eases the stress.  It will also allow you to make this process as enjoyable as possible for you and the kids.
