Since I lost my part-time job, things have been pretty tight around here. To compound matter, I am a freelance writer, so checks do not arrive at regular intervals. As result of all of this is that I cannot afford to attend a conference I have been dying to attend for lack of funds. This is BlogHer’s 3rd conference and this time it is being held in Chicago, closer than San Francisco where it was held last year. Last year was a double loss because I was granted free registration in exchange for blogging live for them. All I had to pay was transportion and lodging. Of course, as soon as I got the gig, airfares skyrocketed. I live in Connecticut, so this blew the whole project out of the water for me.
Back to this year. I decided to get a little adventurous. I decided to email a national print magazine, who I write for online only, and ask if they would fund me in exchange for my right arm and a couple of toes. No, really. The exchange would be a feature article or two, live blogging – whatever they wanted within reason. They can use my considerable skills to get some good stuff for their readers. All I ask is lodging, transportation and conference fees to be paid. I may even be able to get a press pass and forego the conference fees.
Have you done anything a little “different” with your business due to the current bad economy? If so, what? I’m curious to find out if I’m the only one thinking waaaaaaay outside of the box.
