What We Love
Moms who dream of rising through the ranks at this Richmond, VA–based health-care network need only follow the example of its president, a former single mother and nurse’s aide who used HCA’s tuition assistance (now $5,000 per year) to obtain her RN and MBA degrees. Entry-level workers seeking clerical, clinical and support positions undergo skills training through HCA’s School at Work program, while aspiring nurses take on-site classes through a local nursing college. (Those interested in the chief nursing and operations jobs can enroll in executive-track programs.) Women held 74% of managerial and executive jobs last year, and their influence helped create guidelines banning mandatory overtime, interdepartmental “floating” and sudden schedule changes. Discounts are offered at one on-site and two near-site child-care centers.
