FLEX APPEAL Flexibility starts at the top at this Midwestern accounting and tax firm: The president, a father of two, works from home whenever he's not traveling. And he's not the only one. Employees enjoy an array of options—from telecommuting to flextime and compressed schedules. Company leaders are responsible for making sure it stays that way: Each geographic unit is held accountable for building a flexible work environment.

CHILD-CARE KUDOS The Extended Care Cash benefit reimburses employees up to $1,500 a year for child-care costs incurred for business travel or work outside their normal schedules.

LEAVES WE LOVE Employees who want to be with their kids or pursue a personal interest full-time and rejoin the company later can do so. The FlexCareer program enables staffers to take a personal leave of up to five years, with the company subsidizing continuing professional education so they can maintain their licenses and keep their skills up to date.

WHAT WORKS Work/life goal-setting is a formal part of staffers' annual performance review, giving them a strong incentive to balance personal and career needs. More than 63% of workers have written work/life plans, which they discuss with their managers throughout the year.
