If you or your child suffer from allergy-related asthma, early fall likely sets off the sneezing, wheezing and coughing. Keep allergy flare-ups at bay with these tactics from Catherine Monteleone, MD, an associate professor of medicine at UMDNJ–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

1) Avoid being outdoors on windy days, since pollen can travel hundreds of miles in the wind and cause allergy symptoms (runny nose and itchy eyes), which in turn can cause asthma symptoms.

2) Don’t exercise outdoors early in the morning, because that’s when pollen counts are highest.

3) Wear sunglasses to keep pollen away from your eyes.

4) Close the windows when indoors to keep the pollen outside.

5) Ask your doctor about allergy shots if your medications aren’t controlling your allergies and asthma. The injections could alleviate symptoms.
