Sun exposure isn’t just harmful to grown-up skin—too much sun during childhood is also a risk factor for adult skin cancer. And you can’t always be there to slap on the block. So before your kid learns firsthand about sunburn this summer, send her online for facts about solar rays and skin safety. The American Academy of Dermatology’s new interactive website kidsskinhealth.org offers 8- to 12-year-olds engaging advice on proper skin care.

Tips for the kids:

  • Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and broad-spectrum protection from both UVA (ultra-violet) and UVB rays.
  • Don’t forget your ears.
  • Put on a hat and sunglasses when heading outside on sunny days.
  • Seek shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.,when the sun’s rays are strongest.
  • Beware of tanning beds, which can also harm skin. (If your teen wants a summer glow, suggest self-tanners.)
