The best way to celebrate National Bike Safety Month is to take your child shopping for a helmet. Helmets could prevent about 75 percent of fatal injuries to child cyclists, according to SafeKids.org. When shopping, check that the helmet fits your child well and let your biking enthusiast pick out her own—she’s more likely to wear it if she thinks it looks cool.
The Bicycle Coalition of Maine developed an “Eye-Ear-Mouth” test for helmet fit and adjustment:
- When you look upward the front rim should be barely visible to your eye
- The Y of the side straps should meet just below your ear
- The chin strap should be snug against the chin so that when you open your mouth very wide you feel the helmet pull down a little bit.
