Most families have at least one picky eater. And pickiness is contagious, so as soon as one child starts whining that they hate the turkey meatloaf, the others refuse to let even a bite pass their lips. Here are some strategies to outwit the fussiest of kids: • Use rainbow and chocolate sprinkles as a condiment. A few shakes on a foreign-looking dish will entice them into tasting something they’d usually take a pass on. • Presentation counts so invest in a few plastic squeeze bottles (I got mine from a cake decorating supplies store, Tk Website) and fill them with catsup, chocolate or strawberry syrup. An artful drizzle of the syrup can get a kids to inhale oatmeal, yogurt, high fiber cereal or whole grain pancakes. Pipe a beautiful circle of catsup around the meatloaf or chicken on your child’s plate. • Kids love to dunk. Make an instant dip for breaded chicken cutlets by mixing lowfat yogurt with a little Dijon mustard and honey. And low-fat dressings make the vegetables go down. So do toppings, such as grated cheese, or buttered bread crumbs, or (for older kids), chopped, toasted walnuts or almonds. • Plant a garden or a herb garden with your kids. They’re more likely to eat something they’ve gown themselves.
