You shop organic, use a ceramic mug at work and recycle with pride. So naturally you want to bring your new baby into a greener world. A simple way to start? Suggest an earth-friendly baby shower to the sweet friend who’s offered to plan your party, says Robin Morris, mom of two and president of eco-POLITAN.com, a website featuring natural baby products.

Then pass along Morris’s great green tips:

Start with invites. Limit your carbon footprint by sending e-invitations or mailing recycled-paper postcards.

Serve up reusables. Nix plastic utensils and paper plates in favor of silverware, china and linen napkins. Don’t have enough? Consider renting tableware from a caterer. Eat smart. Serve organic fruits and vegetables that are locally grown. Prepackaged, precut foods yield more waste.

Gather greener gifts. Encourage guests to bring their kids’ gently used toys and clothes. Friends could also group purchase a long-lasting item to avoid duplicating presents. Also, use your registry to highlight products such as BornFree BPA-free bottles and pacifiers (from $8, newbornfree.com) and American Baby Company organic cotton crib sheets ($15, amazon.com). All in all, says Morris, “you’ll help make the planet a better place for your little one.”
