
Issues about weight are no longer reserved for teens and young adults: 81 percent of 10-year-olds are afraid of being fat, according to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA). Concerns about dieting are skewing younger and younger, increasing kids’ risk for anorexia and bulimia. Talk to your kids regularly about healthy eating and body image, and watch for warning signs such as these, says Lynn Grefe, CEO of NEDA. Skipping meals. If your child avoids dining with family and friends, she could be hiding unhealthy habits. Overexercising. Anguish about a missed workout may signal an obsession with weight loss. Changes in self-image. Be aware of negative comments about appearance, size and shape, and zero in on them to start a sensitive conversation with your child.
