You’ve heard that nail salons can expose you to bacterial and fungal infections if everything isn’t properly sanitized. But it seems there’s another health risk lurking: the nail dryer. While you think you’re saving time by drying your nails under a heat lamp, UV nail lamps expose you to the same UV light as a tanning machine, says Deborah F. MacFarlane, MD, professor of dermatology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. “Just as with tanning booths, this can result in skin cancers on the hands,” she explains. Fortunately, there’s no need to use the UV lamp (it’s the one emitting the white-blue light). For regular or acrylic manicures, ask for a quick-dry topcoat or place your hands under a fan. If you must have your gel manicure, opt for the newer no-light gels, which can be cured with a special gel activator. This way, good grooming and good health can go hand in hand.
