You may think your kid just doesn’t listen to you, but have you considered that she actually doesn’t hear you? Hearing loss affects nearly 20 percent of American adolescents, a rise of 5 percent over the last 15 years, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s website, ListenToYourBuds.org, suggests discussing with kids these ways to determine when noise or music is too loud: You need to raise your voice for your child to hear you; she has difficulty understanding someone an arm’s length away; she has pain, ringing or buzzing in her ears after exposure to loud sounds; voices seem muffled or dull after noise exposure. The message she needs to hear: Turn down the volume.
