Sarah Beatty
Founder and President of the Green Depot, 45
Kids: Elizabeth, 6; Jacob, 4
MTV veteran Sarah Beatty founded Green Depot in the trendy Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York with a simple plan—to sell nontoxic building supplies. She was motivated to leave her TV roots because she wanted to create a safe, nontoxic and environmentally friendly home environment for her two children, and she knew there was a market full of likeminded customers. Green Depot was the natural progression of that idea. Working Mother magazine profiled Beatty in 2008. At the time Green Depot had $10 million dollars in revenue and ten stores. Last year Green Depot merged with Greenmaker making it the largest supplier of green building suppliers in the US. The chain now has 20 stores and warehouses and is poised to grow even more in the coming years. Beatty says, “My hope is that Green Depot can be a resource for people, like me, who want to feel empowered to make the best, intelligent decisions for themselves and their families.”
