Vonetta Flowers, Olympic Gold Medal Winner
We love this mom for her inspiration and reminding us to take care of our family's health. When she didn’t qualify to compete in the long jump in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, Vonetta Flowers didn’t give up hope. Instead, she shifted her focus to the bobsled and competed in the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah becoming the first ever-black woman to win a gold medal in the winter Olympics. Now, as a national spokesperson for American Lung Association’s “Faces of Influenza,” Vonetta uses her own experiences with the flu—high fever, extreme tiredness, muscle aches–to urge others to get vaccinated. As a mother to twin boys, Jorden and Jaden, who were three months premature, Vonetta says, ““In their short lives, my boys have already faced obstacles. But, you can be sure that I will do my best not to let the flu became another obstacle. Not if I can help it. That’s why I urge my whole family to get immunized each year. I hope others do the same. Don’t play with your family’s health.” Vonetta gave birth to her third son, Jaxon, in 2009.
