Honored for their diverse work and energy, Shanell Nero and Sally Turner are just two of this year’s Heroines.

Shanell Nero is nominated as a Rising Star Heroine by her employer Lockheed Martin. Shanell’s commitment to helping her colleagues support community events is best demonstrated through her organization of a Relay for Life team in Arlington for the Lockheed Martin Network of Volunteer Associates. She also encouraged her officemates to volunteer once a month to prepare food for the homeless at Miriam’s Kitchen. She was recognized by Calvert All Stars for her leadership as a dance coach and for mentoring girls through dance. Chantilly High School presented her with a service award for her help with their Technical Expo. Shanell is committed to being a strong role model for girls in science and math and was recognized by Dogwood Elementary School for her role in their Girls Excelling in Math and Science Conference.

Sally Turner is a leader at CGI Federal and well recognized within the federal technology industry. In 2007 she was re-elected to the Industry Advisory Council’s Executive Board and is a member of the Board’s Executive Leadership Conference Planning Committee. In 2009 she was elected to the AFFIRM Board. Her leadership and passion extends beyond the work place via her role at the Women’s Center Executive Council. As chair she leads the mission to provide financial, career, psychological counseling and educational programs to victims of domestic violence. Since her involvement began in 2007 she has helped them raise over $300,000 and recruited over 50 executives to join her in supporting the Center. Sally is not shy in asking her friends in the industry for help and recently secured pro bono services to help upgrade the Women’s Center’s infrastructure. Sally has served on the Board of Women in Technology and is chair of their Mentoring Program. In recognition of her leadership, she is a recipient of the Presidential Award from Women in Technology. She was nominated as an Individual Heroine of Technology.

Martha McCollum is a self-defined Relationship Engineer and advocate of many causes including March of Dimes, Avon Walk for Breast, Virginia Tech and her local neighborhood of Fells Point.
