Problem: When most of us think of protecting ourselves from the sun, we think sunscreen. But one part of the body is getting overlooked, says Dr. Craig Ziering, a hair transplant surgeon. The sun can cause long-term damage to hair folicales that can result in dry, brittle hair or even bald spots. “Aside from sun damage, one of the biggest mistakes people make in the summer is simply not properly washing hair after being in the ocean or pool,” he explains Dr. Craig Ziering.

Solution: Follow these easy hair care tips to keep your scalp from suffering. First, drink lots of water—it’s the safest and best moisturizer for skin and hair. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink poolside because it dries out skin and hair. Be gentle to you hair when it’s wet, use only soft ties and avoid metal clips or rubber bands that can cause hair breakage. Use a protective sun spray to avoid getting sunburn on your scalp. Opt for a leave-in conditioner before you go swimming and rise off your hair afterwards–salt water and chlorine dry out your hair.
