If you’re still looking for a touching gift for the woman who gave you life or made sure you survived childhood, the one your kids call “Grandma,” we gathered some ideas from around the web that don’t need to be shipped and a couple great books that can be a quick pick up at a bookstore.

Crafty Gifts:

During your teen years, did you ever spend hours making the perfect “mix tape” for your crush? Thank mom for helping you through (or at least tolerating) your teenage angst by creating a special CD on iTunes. Include a thoughtful note or some original artwork on the handmade CD cover if you can. I’ve decorated mine with stickers, glitter paint and photos. But you can print one in iTunes if you’re in a hurry, or turn to a digital scrapbooking site like www.scrapblog.com for design help.

Mom It Forward With Do-Good Gifts:

Give a gift that will help a hard-working mom lift herself out of poverty. Invest at least $20 at MicroPlace in honor of your mom, and she’ll get a beautiful hand-woven fair trade scarf (pictured) from India as well as an e-card explaining how MicroPlace works. MicroPlace loans the funds it collects to needy people worldwide to start their own businesses.

More Than a Gift Card:
Gift cards are popular last-minute gifts. In fact, companies like Amazon and Gifts.com offer last-minute gift cards that can be delivered by email or printed out by the gift giver. This year, give a gift card that shows you care. At JustGive.org, you can select from a number of different e-card designs or choose a traditional card that can be mailed to the recipient. Mom can use the GiveNow card to make a donation to the charity of her choice.

Put a Smile on Her Face:
Give the gift of comic relief to the stressed-out new mom in your life. The Perfect Baby Handbook: A Guide for Excessively Motivated Parents (www.perfectbabyhandbook.com) by Dale Hrabi is hilarious because it so accurately satirizes the hypercompetitive, status-obsessed culture that pressures moms to raise “the perfect baby.”

True Mom Confessions: Real Moms Get Real by Romi Lassally compiles some of the most outrageous, naughty and heartfelt confessions from the popular website (www.truemomconfessions.com). The result is a funny—and at times shocking— book that reminds us that perfect moms exist only on TV.
