Why We Love Her
As president of the second-largest health organization in the state, Janet travels frequently and has an always-on-the-go schedule, so when she gets time with her kids, she focuses on quality. Her blackberry and cell phone get left behind so she can be there physically, mentally and emotionally for tae kwon do, soccer and tennis. She extends the same courtesy to her employees: the word ohana means “family” in the Hawaiian language but is also a central value in business practices. Says a staffer, “Janet is guided by a benevolent instinct that encompasses care and compassion always.”
Q: What’s your best advice for a new mom returning to work?
A: You have to find new ways to get your work done without compromising your performance. Look at it as an opportunity to ask yourself if you’re working efficiently, if you’re delegating enough, and if you’ve created the support system at home that you need to continue being successful at work.
Q: What’s your biggest working mom confession?
A: Because of my busy schedule running a health-care organization, I have some guilt about the numerous school events I miss with my children. My husband is terrific. He videotapes all the celebrations and performances and we sit down together with our children and watch them as a family. They love to watch themselves and retell the events with an insider’s view.
Q: What’s your best tip for keeping your home life running smoothly?
A: Recognize that it’s a work in progress. Roles and schedules often change. As a family unit, be flexible and always communicate so needs are being met. When my husband and I both used to work, we had nannies taking care of the children. Life was hectic and we didn’t spend much time together, even though we had the economic means to live comfortably on one salary. We decided to make a change and everyone is happier.
