Grapes, in their many forms (fruit, raisins and oh, yeah, wine!) provide plenty of health benefits, but now there’s yet another reason to love these vine-picked treats: They’re heart smart. Researchers at the University of Michigan (UM) compared rats who ate a combination of green, red and black grapes as part of a high-salt diet to animals who didn’t eat the fruits. After 18 weeks, the grape eaters had lower blood pressure, better heart function and less inflammation throughout their bodies than the other group. “Some compound within the grapes is having an effect on cardiovascular risk, beyond the simple blood-pressure-lowering impact that comes from eating fruits and vegetables,” says study coauthor Steven Bolling, MD, a professor of cardiac surgery at UM Medical School. Though more research needs to be done, Bolling says adding about a cup of grapes to your regular daily diet is a good bet. To get more into your meal plans, try freezing washed grapes in a plastic bag for a refreshing snack or sprinkling chopped ones into salads.
