
Your baby’s due, your budget’s tight, and you’ve lost your decorating mojo. So how do you create a beautiful, unique room for your new baby? No worries. Interior design pro Tracy Hutson, part of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition team and author of Feathering the Nest, shares tips for creating a special space for your baby without permanently cracking your nest egg.
Repurpose what you have.
Hutson, a mom of two, says this is a great way to style on the cheap. “If you reuse something like an old stored-away dresser, you can give it a fresh coat of paint, put a changing pad on it and call it a day.”
Surf for deals.
Buy furniture online at sites like craigslist.org, where “you can bargain—you’re not dealing with a department store, so there’s room for negotiation,” she says. Ask the seller questions and check out the items in person to ensure that they’re safe and functional.
Embrace hand-me-downs.
Start sharing circles with your friends and family. Also, limit gender-specific purchases if you think you may have more children in the future.
Research retail trade-ins.
