Whether you’re slouching at your desk or giving piggyback rides, your back takes a beating every day. Acupuncture and similar treatments can help to relieve chronic back pain, according to a recent study published in Archives of Internal Medicine. Daniel C. Cherkin, PhD, lead author of the study, filled us in on therapies that can help get you “back” in shape.

Acupuncture A traditional Chinese medicine technique in which needles are inserted into the body at specific points. The needles stimulate the nervous system to release chemicals that help alleviate pain.

Alexander Technique A mind-body technique that teaches you to change damaging movement habits (like slouching at your desk or lifting things improperly), improve breathing and avoid muscle strain.

Pilates A fitness technique that teaches you to improve spine alignment and increase flexibility, which improve posture.
