You thought you got rid of it back in high school, but acne can still be an occasional problem for 50 percent of adult women. That said, there are more treatments available now than when you were a teen. In addition to over-the-counter products, another effective blemish-busting option is a chemical peel, says a new study from Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Researchers there found that at a one-month follow-up visit after treatment with either glycolic or salicylic acid peels, 94 percent of study participants had shown improvement. Temporary side effects include redness, peeling and scaling. Talk to your dermatologist to find out if these treatments might work for you.
Did you know that faux sugars may wreck your diet? Calorie-free sugar substitutes might seem like the way to have your cake and slim down, too. But the opposite might be true, according to a study from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. When researchers fed rats artificially sweetened yogurt, the rodents consumed more calories later in the day and gained more weight than those fed with sugar-sweetened yogurt—indicating that eating a food sweetened artificially can lead to more weight gain than eating the same food sweetened with higher-calorie sugar. “When you’re about to eat something sweet, your body gets ready to take in a lot of calories,” says study coauthor Susan Swithers, PhD. When the artificial sweeteners don’t provide the calories, your body gets confused, so you may crave more food and eat more calories than planned. Depending on how you look at it, this could be sweet news.
