It’s tough enough to be a working mom with a new baby. But if this is also the time for your older child to potty train—yikes! Weeks of vigilant toilet teaching while tending to an infant might seem overwhelming, but we’ve got good news: It’s possible to potty train your child in less than a week, according to Wendy Sweeney, RN, creator of the Booty Camp program in Chicago. Her prime strategy: Set aside one day to focus only on potty training and give your child an intensive course on listening to his body, so he can master this skill more quickly. Her other secrets:

Set up a station. Choose an area in your house with a wood, linoleum or tile floor, like the kitchen, for easy cleanup. Have your child set up his potty, a box of wipes and a tissue box. He shouldn’t wear a diaper.

Give goodies.
Offer pretzels and juice. Salt draws water into the colon to soften the stool and help prevent constipation. The sweet drinks won’t really quench his thirst, so he’ll keep drinking and have to pee more.

Teach empowerment. The goal is to encourage your child to listen to the signals his body is giving him and feel in charge. If his body is telling him to pee or poop, it’s his responsibility to go. When he’s successful, offer praise.

Manage meltdowns. If your child has an accident, teach him how to help you clean up, and explain that the next time he should sit on the potty as soon he feels the need to go. This sets him up to succeed.
