You already know your sweet tooth is bad for your abs and thighs. Now, experts suggest it may age your skin. Some dermatologists believe that when we eat sugar, we get wrinkles thanks to a process called glycation. “This is when sugar molecules in your body bind to collagen and elastin fibers—which keep skin firm—and produce particles that break them down,” explains Fredric Brandt, MD, a New York City– and Miami-based dermatologist and the author of 10 Minutes, 10 Years. So skin sags, wrinkles and gets an uneven tone. Glycation may also reduce your skin cells’ protective capabilities, making them more vulnerable to environmental damage like sun and pollution. So try to consume as little refined sugar as possible—especially because you’re already eating more than you realize thanks to hidden sugar in foods like tomato sauce, ketchup, bread and salad dressings. Your best bet for a sweet fix: fresh fruit.
