Offering your kids bunk beds may seem like an excellent way to make them happier about going to sleep at night, but it’s not the safest way, according to a recent study in Pediatrics. Researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH, found that there are about 36,000 bunk-bed-related injuries every year, with three quarters of them happening to children younger than 10. If you have bunk beds in your house, be sure that your kids know the right way to climb up and down. Emphasize that it’s very unsafe to jump off the top bunk. Also, the Sleep Products Safety Council says you should make sure that children under 6 sleep only in the lower bunk, not on top; that there are no openings in either the upper or lower bunk large enough for a child’s head, torso or limb to pass through; and that you use only proper-sized, manufacturer-recommended mattresses.
