It’s only November, but your child’s summer fun should already be on your mind. An estimated 35 percent of camps begin registration between September and December, so if you haven’t signed your child up yet, look into it—especially because many programs offer early-bird discounts. Why summer camp for your child? Besides the fact that you need her to be taken care of while you’re at work, studies show that campers return with more self-confidence and self-esteem, according to Peg Smith, CEO of the American Camp Association. Plus, older campers are less likely than noncamping peers to drink alcohol, use marijuana or engage in sexual behavior. To help your child reap the benefits of camp, Smith says: Find the right one by looking for a program that offers activities that match your child’s interests. Opt for day camp for children ages 3 to 7 and for older kids wary of being away from home. Consider overnight camp when your child reaches age 7 to 9 or feels comfortable having sleepovers and spending periods of time away from you.
