The phrase “Wake up and smell the coffee” may now need to become “Smell the coffee and wake up,” according to two recent studies. When researchers from Seoul National University in South Korea exposed sleep-deprived rats to the aroma of coffee, they saw a change in brain activity indicating that the scent had a stress-relaxation effect. Their conclusion: Human stress caused by sleep deprivation may be alleviated with a whiff of java. And a study at Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia found that people who sniffed coffee scent for ten minutes improved their alertness, typing accuracy and speed. Though more research is needed, it can’t hurt to keep a cup of joe on your desk and inhale. Not a coffee drinker?
