There are few things cuter than your young trick-or-treater decked out as Dora the Explorer, Batman, a fuzzy bunny or a creepy witch. But there’s nothing adorable about accidents, so when your costumed cutie heads out to ring doorbells, make sure she’s dressed safely. Here’s how:

Face facts. Choose nontoxic face paint instead of a mask when you can. Masks can restrict your child’s breathing or sight. If she does wear a mask, make sure it fits well, with eyeholes big enough to allow full vision.

Fight fire.
If you buy your child’s costume, make sure all parts of it are labeled “flame resistant.” Steer clear of long, flowy skirts or big, baggy sleeves—which can easily brush past a candle and catch fire.

Be bold.
Dress your child in brightly colored clothing, and attach reflective tape that will glow in the beam of car headlights so that drivers on the road can easily spot her.

Avoid accidents.
Hats, scarves and belts should be tied securely so they don’t fall off and cause your child to trip, and accessories like swords should be made of soft, flexible materials.
