As a new mom returning to work, you've got a lot on your mind and a lot to do. In the rush to get everything done and fill your many roles, you may feel that you have to cut corners here or there. Connecting with your baby should be a top priority - and can be with the simple techniques of infant massage. Infant massage has been show to have many benefits for parents and babies, and it may surprise you to know that the techniques are very easy (and natural) and can be used with your baby in just a few minutes a day. Here are some easy ways to include massage in your normal care routine.
1. Whenever you hold your baby next to you, stroke down her back from her shoulders to her hip. See how she enjoys the stroke. Notice how she responds and relaxes. And notice how good it feels for you to help her relax!
2. During a diaper change, take a few minutes to massage her tummy. As you remove the diaper, take a little oil*, ask her if she would like a little massage. Place your hands on her tummy to let her know this is where you want to massage. Stroke her tummy in a clockwise motion, one hand after the other. To finish, just lay your hands on her tummy to let her know you are done. Go ahead and finish the diaper change. If you like, stroke her legs. Hold her ankle with one hand and with the other hand stroke from her hip to the ankle. Switch hands at the ankle. You accomplished two tasks - a diaper change and finding some quality bonding time!
3. When bathing your baby stroke his arms, legs, chest and back. Rather than just washing, stroke him and feel the smoothness of his skin. Talk with him, turning another to-do into enjoyable time together.
4. As you move your baby or do routine daily tasks like feeding or dressing, spend more time holding and touching your baby with the intent of showing her love. Don't worry about spoiling her. Your baby wants to be with you and near you so enjoy it. And you'll enjoy the daily routines so much more as well.
5. Whenever possible, hold your baby close to you rather than putting him in a seat or stroller. Having your baby close helps you be in tune with his cues and gives you a few more moments to savor these precious days.
Making infant massage a daily part of your routine with these simple tips will help build a bond that lasts a lifetime. So, when you start thinking about your mile-long to-do list, don't fret about finding time for Mommy & Me classes—just hold your baby and stroke her gently. You will both benefit from the close contact. For more information on infant massage or to find an infant massage class in your area, visit www.infantmassageusa.org.
