Grocery-Cart MakeoverWe know eating the right foods is key to staying healthy, but do we really know how to interpret nutrition labels and buy what's best for our bodies? New research suggests that shopping with a nutrition expert could help improve our diets and ward off illnesses like heart disease. In a study at the University of Bristol in England, a dietitian or nutritionist led participants around a supermarket, showing them how to read labels and pick out healthful foods. The result: 75 percent of the shoppers said the guided trips boosted their nutritional know-how. With a few friends to defray cost, you too can hire a nutritionist to take you food shopping at least once. And you'll bag a more balanced diet for life.Gyro What?Yoga and Pilates buffs might want to get off the mat. The hot fitness craze is the Gyrotonic system (just ask Madonna and Tiger Woods). Described as "yoga with resistance," Gyrotonic was created by Juliu Horvath, a principal dancer at the Romanian State Opera. It's done on a special piece of equipment that uses hand- and foot-operated wheelbases and suspended pulleys to create resistance. The 50 exercises blend yoga, ballet, gymnastics, swimming and tai chi and are performed while you focus on your breathing. Benefits include improved posture, cardiovas-cular endurance, flexibility and strength, and decreased muscle tension—all pluses if you sit at a desk long hours or tote heavy toddlers and shoulder bags. (Our editor-in-chief loved her session, even though "it was really hard.") Go to www.gyrotonic.com to locate a program near you.
