If you're breastfeeding, consider including plenty of organic milk and meat in your diet. A new study has found that the breast milk of moms who eat high amounts of organic dairy and meat has increased levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). This fatty acid, which is found in dairy and meat, is thought to be important for newborns' immune system development and may help protect against cancer, allergies and diabetes.Researchers from Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands found that when a nursing mom's dairy and meat consumption was higher than 90 percent organic, her levels of CLA were 17 percent higher than the amounts that were measured in women consuming 50 to 90 percent organic dairy and meat—and more than 30 percent higher than the levels found in those consuming less than 50 percent organic. But what can a nursing mom do if she is a vegetarian or simply doesn't have access to tons of organic options? "Try to eat and drink as many organic foods and beverages as possible, especially milk, which can be particularly effective in boosting CLA levels," suggests lead researcher Lukas Rist. It may be beneficial for your baby, and it's not a bad thing to do for youself either.
