A New Rating for Skin CareIf you see "EPF" on your moisturizer rather than "SPF," it's not a typo; it's actually a new rating scale. EPF, which stands for Environmental Protection Factor, measures how well a product's topical antioxidants protect skin not only from the sun but also from other skin stressors like pollution and smoke. Five of the top antiaging antioxidants found in skin-care products were evaluated in clinical studies and given an EPF based on a 100-point rating scale. The results? Idebenone, a powerful antioxidant, was deemed the most effective with an EPF of 95, followed by vitamin E with an EPF of 80. Currently, only a handful of companies—such as Prevage Skincare, True Cosmetics and Priori—are using the rating, but watch for more in the future. The Benefits of Workout Breaks If even the idea of huffing through long, grueling workouts makes you sweat, here's health news you'll love: Researchers at the University of Tokyo found that resting midway through your workout may burn more fat than exercising without a break. Study participants worked out either for 60 minutes straight followed by a 60-minute rest or for two 30-minute sessions with a 20-minute break between them. The latter group appeared to metabolize more fat than the former. Now you've got a good reason to give yourself a break.
