Late-Night TV May Be Fattening?
If you have a habit of munching while watching TV, you may want to consider doing one without the other, especially if you're trying to shed pounds or maintain your weight. In a study at the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, people ate an average of 44 percent more potato chips while watching Letterman and 42 percent more while watching Leno than when they weren't snacking in front of the TV. "If you're distracted, especially by something you're enjoying, you're not paying attention to how much you're consuming or the fact that you're full," says study author Alan R. Hirsch, MD, founder and neurological director of the foundation. "If you're trying to lose weight, turn off the TV—or at least watch something that's boring."
