Give 'em a Break
Each time my kids hit the books, I set a timer to remind them to take a refreshment break. A brief
breather or treat makes studying more pleasant and helps retention.

Look to the Library
When my kids have a hard time sitting down to do homework, we head to
the library. They focus better there, and the work gets done
faster?usually within an hour. We do this two or three times a week.
It's especially helpful when they're working on a special project.
Mary Kovoor, assistant library program director, Valhalla, NY
Earn Points and Prizes
We turn homework time into an opportunity to earn free points for fun
activities. For example, I match each weekly hour of homework to an
hour of something each child really enjoys: physical activities, family
fun or extra time telephoning friends. Now their grades are improving,
and they're developing a work ethic that'll carry them through life.
Carolyn Tomlin, educator/grant writer, Jackson, TN
Get the Game On
I try to make homework fun, so when my kids study spelling and
vocabulary, we go outside with sidewalk chalk and I quiz them as they
write the words on the pavement. It's like play to them, and they love
it!
